Beautiful English aquatint by Thomas Sutherland (born in 1785) after John Gendall (Exe Island 1790 - Exeter 1865), depicting a view of the city and the castle of La Roche-Guyon (Val-d'Oise) at the edge of the Seine, at the beginning of the 19th century. Strategic location overlooking a loop of the Seine between Normandy and the Ile-de-France, the castle of La Roche-Guyon has a history more than millennium. Originally cut directly into the cliff, it becomes in the twelfth century a fortress with an impregnable dungeon. A manor built at the foot of the cliff will complete this device, connected to the dungeon by an underground staircase. At the end of the Hundred Years War, the castle loses its military vocation and is transformed into a pleasure residence. But the fortified keep will be preserved. It still dominates the Seine Valley for 900 years. Always private, the castle of La Roche-Guyon belongs to the family of La Rochefoucauld since the 17th century. Aquatint, 1821 Good condition, original printing defect
