Les Mis rables, first published in 1862, is one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century--indeed, of all time. Written to improve the desperate plight of the poor and oppressed, this historical novel portrays the life of ex-convict Jean Valjean--a man unjustly imprisoned, buffeted by fate, and hounded by the ruthless detective Javert. Trying to redeem his life, Jean Valjean agrees to care for Cosette, a motherless young girl. But will his kindness prove his downfall? Find out in Victor Hugo's powerful masterpiece--a book that could very well change your life. Les Mis rables is a big book, and most publishers try to pack it into small newsprint pages with tiny, nearly unreadable type. This edition, on the other hand, has been newly designed and printed on large-format, archival-quality paper with easy-to-read type, making it a deluxe volume at a still-reasonable price. Complete and unabridged.  read more

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1862 edition. Excerpt: ... BOOK VIII--THE NOXIOUS POOR MARIUS, LOOKING FOR A GIRL WITH A HAT, MEETS A MAN WITH A CAP Summer passed, then autumn; winter came. Neither M. Leblanc nor the young girl had set foot in the Luxembourg. Marius had now but one thought, to see that sweet, that adorable face again. He searched continually; he searched everywhere: he found nothing. He was no longer Marius the enthusiastic dreamer, the resolute man, ardent yet firm, the bold challenger of destiny, the brain which projected and built future upon future, the young heart full of plans, projects, prides, ideas, and desires; he was a lost dog. He fell into a melancholy. It was all over with him. Work disgusted him, walking fatigued him, solitude wearied him, vast nature, once so full of forms, of illuminations, of voices, of counsels, of perspectives, of horizons, of teachings, was now a void before him. It seemed to him that everything had disappeared. He was still full of thought, for he could not be otherwise; but he no longer found pleasure in his thoughts. To all which they were silently but incessantly proposing to him, he answered in the gloom: What is the use? He reproached himself a hundred times. Why did I follow her? I was so happy in seeing her only! She looked upon me; was not that infinite? She had the appearance of loving me. Was not that everything? I desired to have what? There is nothing more after that. At another time, an accidental meeting produced a singular effect upon him. In one of the little streets in the neighbourhood of the Boulevard des Invalides, he saw a man dressed like a labourer, wearing a cap with a long visor, from beneath which escaped a few locks of very white hair. Marius was struck by the beauty of this white hair, and noticed the man who was...  read more

Let the Les Miserables Interactive CD-ROM take you behind the scenes of this popular musical with a wealth of detail about the production, the book and the French Revolution. You're in your seat, facing the stage, ready to experience Les Miserables--but this isn't the theatre, it's an unusual interface to two CDs full of information. Scroll around the auditorium and click on icons to explore backstage, find out about the team that put the show together or find out more about the show. There are 40 key scenes that you can see the libretto along with a discussion of the musical themes used plus excerpts and readings from the novel, stills and video clips from recent productions and illustrations of the historical events they're based on. Places and technical terms are defined in a pop-up glossary plus a timeline puts the scenes in context in French history, along with details of Victor Hugo's life. You can also find out about every film version that's been made and see details of the actors, sketches of the costumes and images from two London productions. Walk out into the foyer to check out the awards the show has won, visit the gift shop to see the various soundtrack albums, find fan sites or jump to the Web to book tickets and buy merchandise. If you're confused by the program structure there's a map of all the different sections here--disguised as an umbrella. Moving around the interface can be a little frustrating, although you can get at the information in several ways, and you'll swap between the two CDs as you go along. Mac users aren't left behind in the culture stakes as it also runs on the Macintosh platform. While this is no substitute for watching Les Miserables, for fans of the show this interactive journey is a great way to relive favourite moments and to find out about the production and background. --Mary Branscombe  read more
