THE PARENTING TRAP
amazon.co.uk
You are caught in a trap, and, though it may be difficult, you can walk away from it. If you find yourself putting off vacations, doing without a much needed new washer and dryer, or putting off retirement because your 28-year-old needs your perpetual financial assistance, then you may be one of the growing numbers of parents who find themselves parenting adult children. These childrens struggles have become their parents struggles. Quite a few of these children have walked away from God and all of their home training, yet you, the parent, take on the responsibility of fixing their problems. You have either done it, or you are doing it or know someone who is. There are reasons you do it and reasons you should stop.Gods Word can help you put your relationship with your adult child in perspective. The Parenting Trap is a literary support group of sorts which will help you gain that much needed perspective should you find yourself struggling with a struggling adult child. It is this perspective that will help you end the struggle, thus, freeing you and your child to become all that God would have you to be.Patricia Knott divides her time between the practice of medicine and serving in various ministries in her local church. Freaky Friday/The Parent Trap [DVD]
amazon.co.uk
In the wonderfully entertaining Freaky Friday, teenager Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and her fortysomething psychiatrist mum Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) have sunk into a rut of frustrated bickering--until a magic spell causes them to switch bodies. Suddenly Tess finds herself faced with petty teachers, vicious rivals and a hunky boy, while Anna has to cope with her mother's neurotic patients as well as her befuddled fianc (Mark Harmon), who doesn't understand why his bride-to-be is suddenly recoiling from his embrace on the eve of their wedding. Both Lohan and Curtis turn in deft, delightful performances, with Curtis showing a surprising flair for physical comedy. The movie even manages to explore serious issues about fractured families, new parents and adolescent sexuality with honesty and empathy--and without making the story stop dead in its tracks. This 2003 remake of the 1977 original is a mother-daughter film that fathers and sons can enjoy just as much. --Bret Fetzer  read more

The Parent Trap (Pushkin Children's Flapped PB)
amazon.co.uk
Luise has ringlets. Lottie has braids. Apart from that they look exactly the same. But they are sure that they have never set eyes on each other in their lives. When the two girls meet at a summer camp and discover the secret behind their similarity, they decide to switch places. Everyone is fooled (apart from the dog) and, despite a few mistakes and misadventures, everything goes to plan for Luise as Lottie and Lottie as Luise - until their father meets a young, beautiful woman and things start to unravel... Funny, moving, affectionate and improbable, The Parent Trap has twice been adapted for film - but the book remains one of the great classics of German children's literature. Erich Kstner, writer, poet and journalist, was born in Dresden in 1899. His first children's book, Emil and the Detectives, was published in 1929 and has since sold millions of copies around the world and been translated into around 60 languages. After the Nazis took power in Germany, Kstner's books were burnt and he was excluded from the writers' guild. He won many awards, including the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1960. He died in 1974.  read more

The Gender Trap: Parents and the Pitfalls of Raising Boys and Girls
amazon.co.uk
From the selection of toys, clothes, and activities to styles of play and emotional expression, the family is ground zero for where children learn about gender. Despite recent awareness that girls are not too fragile to play sports and that boys can benefit from learning to cook, we still find ourselves surrounded by limited gender expectations and persistent gender inequalities. Through the lively and engaging stories of parents from a wide range of backgrounds, The Gender Trap provides a detailed account of how todays parents understand, enforce, and resist the gendering of their children. Emily Kane shows how most parents make efforts to loosen gendered constraints for their children, while also engaging in a variety of behaviors that reproduce traditionally gendered childhoods, ultimately arguing that conventional gender expectations are deeply entrenched and that there is great tension in attempting to undo them while letting 'boys be boys' and 'girls be girls.' The Over-Scheduled Child: Avoiding the Hyper-Parenting Trap
amazon.co.uk
Do you find yourself asking "Whose life is it anyway?" Parenting today has come to resemble a relentless to-do list. Even parents with the best intentions strive to micro-manage every detail of their kids' lives and live in constant fear that their child will under-perform in any area--academic, social, athletic. Lists and schedules, meetings and appointments invade our every moment and the need to be the best dominates--and undermines--our own sense of self as well as our children's. In their groundbreaking new book The Over-Scheduled Child, renowed child psychiatrist Alvin Rosenfeld, M.D., and longtime family-issues journalist Nicole Wise combine personal and professional experience to take action against what they see as our overeager pursuit of perfection. The clear, comforting steps they prescribe to attack this rampant phenomenon will promote healthier and happier children and revitalize the parenting experience.  read more

The Time Torch : The Closing Trap
amazon.co.uk
This techno-thriller is the sequel to The Time Torch : Reward and Retribution. It continues the adventures of Ben and Frances Dey as the authorities realise that the Deys have technology for super surveillance without knowing what it is. Little do they know that the Deys can see into the past and record it, even the near past. They can see what happened a second ago even from miles away.In this book, the British and American intelligence services compete to be the first to find out how the Deys can be so omniscient and to get their hands on the technology. The Deys find themselves having to manipulate at the highest levels of Government to stay safe.I make a big distinction between science fiction and science fantasy. Strange and weird worlds with aliens and exotic behaviours leave me cold. So does, time travel where the past can be changed to make a different present. These stories are fun but too far from reality for my taste. I enjoy stories which are almost feasible and which explore just one small change to our day to day experience. What would we do and what would happen if we were able to display past events on a computer screen? We cant change the past but we can see and record any scene that has happened as if there were an invisible camera there to record it. Would we use it for good or ill? What would greedy governments do to get their hands exclusively on the technology?  read more
